Deirdre Amukowa
Creative Writing Major
I originally decided to attend SUNY Nassau because it was the most affordable college near me. Little did I know how great my decision would turn out to be! My professors have been truly outstanding and it's wonderful to be around other students who share so many common interests. I have had lots of terrific professors but am especially grateful for two of my English professors, who inspired me to write and create more poems and stories. I still keep all my old essays and stories.
You can imagine how excited I was to have one of my poems ("Skins") published in the Long Island Press! I also read it at the Westbury Arts Council's Black History Month Fifth Anniversary Weekend Jubilee and the Westbury High School Black History Month celebration.
After I graduate from SUNY Â鶹ÊÓƵ I hope to continue on to CUNY Queens College. And to continue creative writing!

I served in the United States Navy in Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, II and at Camp Pendleton with the 5th Marines. I was also deployed to Okinawa, Japan twice. Stateside, I knew that Â鶹ÊÓƵ has a reputation for being very military friendly, and when I got here, it was true.
